Briggs Used Equipment team donates Hyster truck to Community Food Enterprise Limited

Briggs Equipment UK are committed to supporting local charities and community projects, and as part of that commitment have recently donated a Hyster J1.8XNT to award winning social enterprise food business Community Food Enterprise Limited (CFE).

CFE was founded in 2002 by members of the local community and operates from Briggs’ customer Tate & Lyle’s site in East London. Dave Foxcroft is our resident engineer based on site and when he became aware of the charity’s need for a forklift truck as theirs had broken down and was beyond economical repair he wanted to help.  Working with the charity, Used Equipment, Workshops, Logistics and the Regional services teams were able to secure a suitable replacement forklift for them.

CFE believe that everyone in the community has the right not just to food, but to food that is safe, nutritious, affordable, accessible and culturally acceptable. Their aim is to work in partnership with the diverse communities of London, and nationally with those of similar needs, to safeguard and sustain the right of their community in all its diversity to access the right food at an affordable price as a fundamental condition for individual and community health and well-being. They are involved with or run a number of important initiatives including supporting local food banks and charities with donations, supporting local shops, restaurants and cafés in deprived neighbourhoods with low cost fresh produce with a no minimum order policy that helps them to reduce wastage and keep the cost down for the customer.

Their latest initiative is their ‘social food outlets’. These are mobile food vans that are designed to service areas of London classified as ‘food deserts’ within Dagenham and Barking. They allow customers to come on board and select their own produce and pay at the counter. They are fully equipped with cold store, hand wash facilities, CCTV and steps and railings for accessibility. The outlets are mobile every Wednesday and a timetable of where they will be and when can be downloaded here.

CFE are currently appealing for donations for their food bank. They can accept non-perishable items such as beans, canned meats and fish and some perishable items provided that they have a use by date of longer than one week. CFE can collect donations from the East London area. Simply let them know where to collect from by giving them a call on 020 7511 9014.

The forklift Briggs have donated will be instrumental for moving stock within their warehouse facilities and loading and unloading deliveries. Janet Noble who steers Briggs’ charity workgroup said “It’s great that we can help make a difference in the communities we work in.”

Afzal Hussain, Finance Manager at CFE said; “We would like to extend our gratitude to the team at Briggs Equipment for their generosity in donating a forklift to us, which will help CFE for years to come.”

The Hyster J1.8XNT is the ideal forklift for this operation as it a tough, energy efficient electric counterbalance forklift truck. It is designed to deliver a low cost of operation and has low maintenance requirements. The donation includes a 12 month warranty which will include a LOLER and servicing.

Briggs looks forward to supporting CFE into the future and seeing the brilliant work that they undertake make a vital difference in the communities it serves.

We’d also like to say a special thank you to Battery Services Ltd, Birmingham for their support.
