Briggs Equipment handed RoSPA Silver Award for health and safety practices

Briggs Equipment has been handed a prestigious RoSPA Silver Health and Safety award in recognition of its practices and achievements in helping its staff get home safely at the end of the working day.

The Silver Award is non-competitive and is awarded on the merits of satisfactory occupational health and safety management systems and culture, improving compliance with control measures for principle risks and actions on health issues, reducing accident rates and no fatal or major injuries due to employer negligence.

After putting their health and safety systems under the microscope during the Barloworld acquisition five years ago, Briggs have been on a journey to continually improve measures starting with the BE Safe campaign which has sought to educate, reduce risks and enable employees to flag up risks that they come across to enable the company to put preventative measures in place.

Safety is one of Briggs’ core company values and is continually measured, however Briggs will not rest on their laurels and looks forward to hosting their fourth health and safety conference later this year.

As a result, they were presented with the award during a ceremony at Hilton Birmingham Metropole hotel on Wednesday, July 4, 2018.

The RoSPA Awards scheme, which receives entries from organisations around the world, recognises achievement in health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. The categories are judged by an expert adjudication panel consisting of highly experienced professionals from The Health and Safety Executive and the Institute of Occupational Health amongst many other renowned organisations.

Commenting on the achievement, Gavin Wickham Group Engineering Services Director said, “Briggs has been a member of RoSPA for almost two years and takes workplace safety very seriously. This is the first time we’ve been involved in the awards initiative so we are delighted to win a RoSPA Achievement Award.”

Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of qualifications, awards and events, said: “The RoSPA Awards are the most highly-respected in the health and safety arena, with almost 2,000 entrants every year, and allow organisations to prove excellence in the workplace, demonstrating a commitment to the wellbeing of not only employees but all those who interact with it.”
