Asset maintenance is the practice of keeping your physical assets, such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and any other equipment in optimal working condition. This includes regular maintenance, servicing and repairs to ensure the machines’ performance and safety.
An asset maintenance plan is an agreement in which a company pays a regular fee, usually monthly, for the ongoing maintenance of their equipment. That includes preventative servicing, LOLER Thorough Examinations and planned maintenance.

Yes, we can fully tailor asset maintenance plans to align with your requirements, whether these are simply to remain compliant, or for your equipment fleet to be fully maintained in line with the manufacturers, or Briggs Equipment’s recommendations. Plans are available on a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) basis with an agreed schedule, or on a Full Repair and Maintenance contract.
There are 2 pieces of legislation which pertain to the maintenance of industrial equipment:
- LOLER - Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. This legislation applies to lifting equipment and operations
- PUWER - Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. PUWER covers all workplace equipment and focuses on ensuring machinery is suitable for use, properly maintained and operated by trained personnel
Under PUWER 1998, there is no fixed maintenance frequency (e.g. weekly, monthly, or annually) specified in the regulations. Instead, Regulation 5 requires work equipment to be maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair.
Maintenance intervals should be based on:
- The manufacturer's maintenance schedule
- The results of your risk assessment
- The likelihood of deterioration affecting safety
- Usage levels (single shift vs. 24/7 operation)
- The operating environment (e.g. clean warehouse vs. quarry, foundry, waste facility)
Typical examples
For materials handling equipment such as forklift trucks, many organisations follow:
- Daily / pre-use operator checks
- Planned preventive maintenance (PPM) every 250–1000 operating hours or as specified by the manufacturer
- Thorough Examination at statutory intervals under LOLER (where applicable), typically every 12 months, or 6 months for certain lifting applications
These frequencies are industry best practice rather than a PUWER requirement.
Under PUWER 1998 (Regulation 6), there is no specified minimum retention period for service or inspection records. The legal requirement is that where an inspection record is made, it must be kept at least until that piece of equipment is inspected again.
However, in practice, most organisations retain PUWER service and maintenance records for at least 6 years because:
- It aligns with the limitation period for many civil claims
- It provides evidence of maintenance and inspection history in the event of an HSE investigation, accident, or warranty dispute
- It demonstrates ongoing compliance with PUWER duties to maintain equipment in a safe condition
