At Briggs Equipment, we’re always innovating to keep you ahead of the curve. From robust forklifts to reliable forklift tyres, we can keep your business moving.
Therefore, we have created a list of online safety tips and topics to consider about your tyres which will ensure that the safety of you and your employees is never compromised.
Check tyres regularly
Your tyres should always be a part of your daily forklift truck checks to be aware of any damage or wear and tear. Important areas to judge include the surface tread areas, sidewalls and where the tyre is fitted to the wheel.
Tyres for forklifts often fall into one of two categories:
- Pneumatic tyres
- Cushion tyres
What are pneumatic tyres?
A pneumatic tyre is made from rubber and filled with compressed air. They are suited to indoor and outdoor use where the ground is clear of sharp objects.
What are cushion tyres
A cushion tyre is made from solid, heavy-duty rubber, making them less susceptible to wear and tear and eliminating the need for regular tyre changes.
When should tyre pressure be checked?
You should be checking the tyre pressure of your forklift every day. Warm or hot tires can give inaccurate pressure readings so do this before your shift starts.
What can cause excessive or uneven tyre wear?
Here are some tips to prevent abnormal tyre wear:
- Know your load: Don’t overload your forks
- Safety first: Drive responsibly at all times
- Double check: Ensure that tyre pressures are all correct
Can you drive on a flat tyre?
You should always avoid driving on a flat tyre. Driving a forklift with a flat tire can impact the handling and steering which is not safe. If you are unsure about your tyre pressure, consider using an electronic tyre pressure gauge.
What is a Tyre Pressure Gauge?
A tyre pressure gauge is a tool that you can use to monitor the pressure level in your tyres. It may come in the form of a manual gauge with a dial, or as a digital tyre pressure gauge which is useful in low light environments.
