Scissor Lifts: Safe and Efficient Aerial Work Platforms

For our next powered access equipment feature in the Back-To-Basics series we are focusing on scissor lifts. What different types there are? Where would you typically see them at work? And what are the benefits of adding these machines to your fleet?

What is a scissor lift?

A scissor lift is an easy to operate, mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) allowing for safe and stable vertical access.  These single person operation machines are easy to manoeuvre and have a platform providing stability for the operator when working at height.  These compact machines work by a criss-crossing (scissor-like) mechanism to lift vertically.

The smooth vertical movement of the scissor lift offers a safer approach to ladders and scaffolding when working at elevation especially for prolonged periods of time. Unlike boom lifts, which can extend horizontally, scissor lifts just move vertically. This makes them ideal for jobs which require vertical access in tight spaces.

Electric Scissor Lifts

Electric scissor lifts are designed for indoor use where the surface is flat and smooth. These aerial platforms are not fuel powered so do not emit any fumes making them idea for inside operations, such as warehouses, retail and commercial use or for maintenance and repairs. Electric scissor lifts are a safe, reliable and cost-effective solution to your workplace.

Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts

Rough terrain scissor lifts are designed to be more robust and allow for operation on uneven surfaces and in outdoor applications, due to the larger tires and sturdy structures.  These heavy-duty machines have a higher ground clearance to indoor scissor lifts and have enhanced safety features such as stabilisers to help with work on uneven surfaces or construction sites or performing maintenance at height outdoors.

How high can a scissor lift go?

Most electric scissor lifts can reach heights of 10-12 metres, while rough terrain scissor lifts are likely to reach up to 18 metres or more. There are many models available with varying lift heights and load capacities so there is a scissor lift for any environment.

Do you need training to use a scissor lift?

To safely use and operate a scissor lift, you will need proper powered access equipment training and certification. This will often be in the form of a PAL (Powered Access Licence) or something similar. At Briggs Equipment we have a variety of training courses available, including IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) accredited courses.

How safe is a scissor lift?

Scissor lifts are designed to make working at height a safe practice. They tend to include built-in safety features, however, you should  also ensure that you have completed your operator safety training and use the machine within its advised usage limits. As with all aerial work platforms, you should always wear a harness when working at height.
