Tugs: What Are They and How Can They Benefit Your Business?

Materials handling equipment is about more than just forklifts. In this week’s edition of our Back To Basics series we’re providing you with an introduction to another efficient form of MHE electric tugs.

What Is A Tug?

Becoming an increasingly common form of MHE found in a vast range of industries worldwide, tugs offer a safe and efficient method of moving heavy loads with ease. Attaching to one end of the load, the tug is designed to bear the weight of the load so it can be pulled. Types of tugs available through Briggs Equipment include Master Mover electric tugs and Bradshaw Electric Vehicles.

What Is An Electric Tug?

Electric tugs are battery powered machines and provide an effective alternative solution to forklifts. MasterMover is at the forefront of electric tug innovation and their Multi-Link technology can be found in their machines across their Compact range, Performance range and Autonomous Guided Vehicle (AGV) range. As well as custom made electric tug solutions, Master Mover manufacture machines capable of lifting loads of up to 30,000kg. Electric tugs come in a variety of models, with two of the most common being pedestrian tugs and autonomous guided vehicles (AGV).

Pedestrian Tugs

Powered by electricity but operated manually by people, pedestrian-operated tugs are safe and user-friendly. With the tug taking the weight of the load and the battery-operated system assisting the user, this equipment makes materials handling easy. It helps to increase the efficiency of material handling processes and reduces the risk of injury to the machine operator.

Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGV)

Autonomous Guided Vehicle tugs are also referred to as AGV tugs. They function without direct human interaction and instead use programmed settings to carry out the task of transporting the load. Automated Guided Vehicles often fall into two categories; Line Follow and Natural Navigation. You can learn more about AGV electric tugs in our article, The Future Is MasterMover: Everything You Need To Know ABout Automated Guided Vehicles.

How Can A Tug Help My Materials Handling Business?

Tugs are a great alternative to larger materials handling machines like forklifts. Usually cheaper and more user friendly than forklifts, they offer a cost effective and safe solution for moving heavy loads. MasterMover machines in the compact range are also capable of operating in tight spaces, meaning you can create narrower aisles and maximise your facilities storage space.
