Choosing The Right Warehouse Racking System

Briggs Equipment are experts in warehouse solutions, including racking systems.

Forklifts and materials handling equipment is not the only warehouse equipment that will help you get the best out of your premises. The right warehouse racking system can be vital in creating cost-effective and efficient warehouse processes. If you need to increase the number of pallet storage locations, then there is a racking system to do that. Or, if you rely on a quick turn-around for transferring goods from the racking to a delivery vehicle using a single forklift, then drive-in pallet racking may be the best solution. This week, as part of our Back To Basics series, we’re introducing you to the variety of racking systems to consider.

What is warehouse racking?

Warehouse racking comes in many forms, sizes, and functions. Examples include narrow aisle, double deep, and drive-in wide aisle systems. Warehouses are almost always custom-designed to meet specific operational and storage requirements, and racking optimises storage potential. Each warehouse varies in size and has unique requirements that must be considered to achieve maximum efficiency. Racking follows the same principle, and every business has an optimal configuration to discover. We can assist you with this, regardless of your industry.

What is wide aisle pallet racking?

They configure wide aisle pallet racking in rows with multi-level racks to optimise storage. The generous aisle space allows for the safe movement of materials handling equipment. This racking system is the most commonly used for storing palletised loads.

What is narrow aisle racking?

Narrow aisle racking is a spaceefficient pallet storage system, enabling increased storage capacity within a warehouse. It is the perfect option for areas where floor space is limited, whilst enabling efficient access to every pallet for picking, processing or retrieval. You would most commonly see a VNA machine operating in this environment because of the impressive manoeuvrability that they offer.

What is double deep racking?

Double deep pallet racking systems effectively double your storage by allowing you to store pallets at two depths. Operators access the double deep pallets from the same aisle, reducing the number of aisles by half. Double-deep racking provides twice the storage of selective racking without requiring additional aisle space.

While this offers added benefits, it also presents a limitation: operators cannot access all pallets stored, requiring a specialist machine for safe access. Since direct access is only available for units at the front of the racking, we recommend using a LIFO (last in, first out) approach.

What is drive in pallet racking?

They make drive-in racking, or drive-through racking, from multiple racks so forklifts can enter the structure. The forklift moves into the racking to load and unload goods. This system works best in warehouses with limited space.

What is cantilever racking?

Cantilever racking is a storage system designed for longer, heavier or awkward loads which would not fit in regular racking systems. They tend not to have vertical stands at the front of the shelving, but instead have horizontal arms extending out from the rear vertical beams. This creates an open front which makes it ideal for materials such as pipes, steel and timber. We would recommend a Side-Loader forklift to operate within this type of racking system because of their ability to carry longer loads.

What is A-frame racking?

Otherwise known as vertical storage racking, Aframe racking will provide you with a solution for all of your longer, narrower materials which can lean against an angled vertical beam, thus creating an ‘A’ shape.

How often do I need my racking to be inspected?

It is advisable for you to be having your racking checked at least once a year. If your racking has been moved or damaged, this is something you should arrange immediately.
