We believe that training is more than just ticking a box, it’s about giving your people the correct tools and preparation they need to stay safe and work smart. But who is responsible for managing the standards of training for materials handling and powered access equipment? And who are the accrediting bodies? Well, our experts are providing you with your essential introduction to access equipment and forklift truck training.
Trained operators are safer, more efficient and more confident, ensuring these steps will help to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace, as well as keeping you compliant with HSE (UK Health and Safety Executive), OSHA (US Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and other industry regulations.
Our training courses at Briggs Equipment are ideal for:
- New hires learning the equipment for the first time
- Experienced operators needing a refresher
- Supervisors wanting to better understand the equipment their team use
Training Accrediting Bodies
To ensure the highest standards of training, the materials handling industry has accrediting bodies to ensure standards are being met and improved. Accredited training providers are trainers who have proven their ability to meet the set requirements to deliver the training courses.
Who is the ABA?
ABA is the Accrediting Bodies Association. The ABA’s objective in the UK is to ensure that training standards for workplace transport equipment like forklifts are managed, maintained and improved to ensure safe practices. It is an association of accrediting bodies in the materials handling and workplace transport industry. This association includes accrediting bodies such as:
- AITT (Association of Industrial Truck Trainers)
- ITSARR (Independent Training Standards Scheme And Register)
- NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme)
- RTITB (Road Transport Industry Training Board)
Powered Access Equipment Training: IPAF
Working at height can be extremely dangerous, which is why, if you are using access equipment you will need to know how to use it safely. For this you a can take an IPAF training course.
What Does IPAF Stand For?
IPAF stands for the International Powered Access Federation. They’re a global organisation that promotes safe use of powered access machines.
What Is An IPAF Licence?
The IPAF licence is a certification that you receive upon completion of an IPAF training course. An IPAF certification is often also known as a PAL card, which stands for Powered Access Licence. Once you pass the training, you’ll be able to use the IPAF mobile app which holds all of your in-date certifications. It shows that you’re trained and competent to safely use equipment such as cherry pickers, scissor lifts, boom lifts and low level access platforms.
What Equipment Does An IPAF Certification Cover?
Depending on the course you take, it could cover:
- Scissor lifts
- Boom lifts and cherry pickers
- Static booms
- Spider lifts
- Low level access platforms
How Long Is The PAL Certification Valid?
It’s valid for five years. After that, you should think about renewing it with a refresher course, which we can also offer at Briggs Equipment.
Forklift Truck Training: AITT and RTITB
Materials handling equipment and forklift trucks have different training requirements depending on machine type, lifting capacity and other factors. Accrediting bodies such as the AITT and RTITB set the manage the standards of the training courses.
What Does AITT Stand For?
AITT stands for Association of Industrial Truck Trainers. It is a UK-based accrediting body that sets and maintains standards for the training of operators, instructors, and examiners of MHE.
Who is RTITB?
RTITB is short for the Road Transport Industry Training Board. They’re one of the UK’s main accrediting bodies for forklift and materials handling equipment training.
What Equipment Does RTITB and AITT Training Cover?
RTITB and AITT accredited courses cover all kinds of equipment and forklift truck training, including:
- Counterbalance forklifts
- Reach trucks
- Powered pallet trucks
- Rough terrain trucks
- VNA Forklifts (Very Narrow Aisle)
It is important to understand that there are different “types” or “categories” of forklifts and materials handling equipment. This can be determined by its load capacity and other factors. These variables can alter the best practices required for safe usage. Therefore, there is a different training course for each category of machine.
For example:
- Category B1: Counterbalance forklifts with a lifting capacity up to 5 tonnes
- Category B2: Counterbalance forklifts with a lifting capacity between 5 and 16 tonnes.
- Category B3: Counterbalance forklifts exceeding a lifting capacity of 15 tonnes.
If you are unsure as to what certification you require, contact our team for further advice.
How Long Is The RTITB Forklift Licence Valid?
Your RTITB certificate is valid for three years. After that, we would advise you to renew it with a refresher course.
I Want To Do My Forklift Truck Training. What Else Do I Need To Know?
Do I Need A Licence To Drive A Forklift?
All employers are legally responsible for making sure anyone driving a forklift has been properly trained. Proper training will ensure that your people are able to safely move and operate your equipment on site and best practice is observed.
What’s The Forklift Licence Actually Called?
Most people just call it a forklift licence, but it’s really a certificate of basic training, issued by an accredited body like AITT or RTITB. All courses you complete will provide you with certification that we recommend you refresh periodically.
How Do I Get A Forklift Licence?
It’s a simple process, contact one of our team today who will be happy to help with any queries and help you book on to an accredited course.
How Much Does It Cost To Get A Forklift Licence?
The cost of a forklift license will depend on a number of different factors, such as whether you’re a new or existing holder of accreditation, and the number of days the course runs for.
